Voters blame president for gas prices, but experts disagree

The Seattle Times -- WASHINGTON — How much does the president have to do with the price of gasoline?

A lot, American voters say. According to oil experts and economists, not so much — at least in the short term.

Today's oil prices are the product of years and decades of exploration, automobile design and ingrained-consumer habits combined with political events in places such as Sudan and Libya, anxiety about possible conflict with Iran, and the energy aftershocks of last year's earthquake in Japan.

"This notion that a politician can wave a magic wand and impact the 90-million-barrel-a-day global-oil market is preposterous," said Paul Bledsoe, strategic adviser to the Bipartisan Policy Center and a former Clinton administration official.

The price of gasoline is a hardy perennial in presidential campaigns.

"If I had a magic wand to lower gas prices, I would." Know who said that? Pres Bush. No president can unilaterally lower gas prices.

Well, he's succeeded slightly more than 50% on one of his goals.

American voters are right. Why isn't President Obama going after greedy Wall Street oil speculators? Why isn't he making the CFTC do its job in controlling greedy speculators? Why on April 21st did he announce a task force on high oil and gas prices, only to have that task force do absolutely nothing? On March 6th he had to reconstitute his do-nothing task force. Shame on Obama.

This voter does not blame the president. Only Newt can wave a magic wand and create $2.50 gasoline. Clean energy is coming.

True, Obama did want fuel costs to be closer to Europe's. He may not have direct control over the pricing but he and his administration do have say in energy policy. So his hands are as clean on this as they could be.

Today's prices are the product of a president that wanted 7 dollar gas three years ago and said so.
